Towards new agreements: the journey of rebirth by Fabio D’Amato

Fabio D’Amato, an eclectic musical figure, stands out for his particular versatility in the field of musical creation. His work encompasses a wide range of activities, including composing music, creating soundtracks for film, documentary and video productions, and creating jingles for advertisements and television and radio programmes.

His musical roots go back to the age of 7, when he began studying piano and classical music. Over the years, his musical exploration extended to pop music, a genre that immediately captured his heart and creativity.

No less important is his leadership in the artistic direction of a club in Trezzo Sull’Adda. Here he once again demonstrates not only his musical talents, but also his entertainment skills.

Shortly after the release of his latest EP “Infinite passion” on 22 September 2023 and his fifth album “ES Piano solo“, Fabio D’Amato presents “A Second of a New Life“, officially released on 23 June. The primary source of inspiration for this composition was his personal experience of an organ transplant, an event that he skilfully transforms into musical notes, recounting his own state of mind from the announcement of the availability of the donated organ to the moment he leaves the operating theatre.

The piece begins with a delicate piano solo, which creates a slight tension. The composition gradually develops, adding strings and intensifying the piano, symbolically representing the beginning of a transplant. The strings come together strongly, followed by a sudden stop and a return to the solo piano, leaving a sense of suspension.

The video clip for this single was shown exclusively on Sky TG24 on 23 June, the day of its release, and was then made available on YouTube from 26 June. Directed by Andrea La Greca, it depicts Fabio’s journey from despair to hope. It shows Fabio in his routine as a musician, emphasising the positive change through the use of reassuring colours and scenes. The video celebrates the triumph of life, with the protagonist facing challenges and showing his determination to be reborn. It’s a powerful message about rebirth and personal development.

With the aim of helping to improve the care provided in the kidney transplant surgery department of the Fondazione IRCCS Ca’ Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico in Milan, Fabio has resolutely involved the Amici del CROFF association in this worthy project. The association is actively committed to improving the quality of hospital care, paying particular attention to patients at every stage of their illness and treatment. This practical commitment is reflected in a number of initiatives, including the creation of libraries and areas equipped with televisions accessible to patients in hospital or undergoing dialysis, as well as the acquisition of modern, functional beds to improve their comfort.

The association also pays particular attention to promoting scientific research and working with highly specialised health professionals. This takes the form of the acquisition of sophisticated research equipment and expensive instruments for clinical application, as well as collaboration contracts with leading medical personnel in this field.

In recent years, the association has broadened its scope by involving more and more patients and their families in its laudable mission. For more information on the activities of the Friends of Pavillon CROFF, please visit the official website at http://www.amicidelcroff.com/.

Fabio has an impressive musical catalogue, which includes: 5 personal albums: “Essential Songs“, “Essential Songs 2“, “Essential Songs 3“, “Essential Spots” and “ES Piano solo“, 1 EP “Infinite passion“, and numerous singles, including “Thank U“, “Peace“, “2. 16“, “Heroes“, “Instants“, “Everywhere“, “Alice 2“, “Power“, “Missing Hugs“, “Battle of love“, “Vertigo“, “Lights in the dark“, “Caresses on scratches“, “Emotional Life“, “La vie des nuages” and “One Reason“. Several of these songs have been used in advertising.

Fabio D’Amato also devotes his time to songwriting and musical arrangements, collaborating with some of the world’s leading songwriters.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Fabio:

1.         How would you describe your musical style and how has it evolved over the years?

It’s difficult to describe a real musical style: there’s certainly a lot of research into the notes and the essentiality of the songs. Over the years, I’ve always tried to refine my way of communicating through music, trying to involve the audience more and more in the emotions, the “images”, in short, my idea of music is to take the listener on an emotional journey.

2.         Can you tell us about your creative process when composing a new song or soundtrack?

My creative process is essentially based on two elements: an emotion or a video image. If it’s an emotion, on average I start composing by sitting down at the piano, at night in the dark, and I try to get my emotion through my fingers, close my eyes and record the piano, then everything else on the soundtrack is based on the piano.

There, the music has to go hand in hand with the images and amplify them, so the composition will have to take a precise direction, which the images can give or which the artistic directors have decided to communicate.

3.         What are the most common challenges you encounter in the world of composition and how do you meet them?

Each commissioned composition is a very demanding and delicate job. You have to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the project, the communication of a brand, the vision of a company, all of this is a constant challenge because you can’t know a priori if you’ll be able to satisfy the often-complex demands made of you.

You need a lot of experience, a lot of passion and a lot of patience too!

4.         Have you ever been faced with a composer’s block or a lack of inspiration? How do you deal with these situations?

I’ll be honest, at the moment, and I hope it stays that way, I’ve never lacked inspiration, maybe even life, for better or for worse, has always given me great opportunities and sources of inspiration.

5.         Which artists or composers have influenced you the most during your career?

One of my favourite composers is unquestionably Bach. I’ve always found him to be an extraordinary genius and beauty, and it was thanks to him that I started studying music. His “Toccata and Fugue”, when I was a child (aged 7), got stuck in my head and sparked my passion for music.

6.         How do you choose the projects you work on? Is there a specific criterion that guides you in your choice of collaborations or productions?

There’s no doubt that in addition to the artistic discourse, the human relationship with the people with whom I begin a collaboration is fundamental for me.

It’s certain that if there is first of all an artistic affinity and then a human affinity, then the best collaborations are born, which is unfortunately not always the case, but when it happens, I go for it.

7.         Is there a soundtrack or song you’ve composed that you’re particularly proud of? Why or why not?

To be honest, I’m still very attached to all my songs, because each one of them is a piece of me and of my heart. If I had to choose, I’d say the song “Alice” which is dedicated to my daughter, here we’re into reckless, total love that goes beyond all limits.

8.         What has been your most memorable or rewarding collaboration to date?

Fortunately, there have been so many memorable and rewarding moments that I couldn’t choose: from working on commercials, to short films, to some of the most important fashion shows in the world; I want to remember a married couple (whom I didn’t know) who even engraved the title of one of my songs on their wedding rings.

9.         How do you see the future of your music and what are your plans?

I think and hope that I’ll always be able to move my listeners, that has to be the future, otherwise there’s no point going on… that’s the point of music! There are a lot of projects in the pipeline, but I’d just like to mention that my new EP entitled “Infinite passion” has just been released. 4 tracks that will take the listener on a journey towards passion, the passion that drives us all and leads us to love, to be passionate about something/someone: after all, everything is driven by passion…
